If there’s a place to see the amazing wildlife known to Walnut Creek, there’s nowhere better than Lindsay Wildlife Experience. Located at 1931 1st Ave, Walnut Creek, CA 94597, this is one of the best wildlife zoos in the country. With everything from amazing birds of prey to harmless bunny rabbits, there’s a little of everything at this astounding place in California. Yet, there’s more than just seeing animals at the Lindsay Wildlife Experience, the group is also dedicated to the preservation of animal habitats in the nearby area.

Originally founded in 1955, the facility was then known as the Lindsay Wildlife Museum. They have the prestigious title of being the first wildlife hospital in the United States, and for decades have made it their mission to repair the bond of mankind and nature. Every year they treat thousands of animals who’ve not been the luckiest in life, restoring them to health with their rehabilitation centers that are among the largest in the nation.

Many animals unable to return to the wild find a new home at the Lindsay Wildlife Experience. There, they call them “animal ambassadors” and allow some of them to be viewed in public exhibitions, while others are kept secluded only being shown for special presentations. These animals always have psychological or physical issues that prevent them from having the ability to survive in nature, but here they live in protection and serve an important role in educating the public about helping nature.

Their hospital sees to the care of thousands of animals every year who’ve been affected by a plethora of man-made accidents. It’s run by both professional staff and a group of volunteers who rehabilitate and save animals who’ve been injured by cars or had their habitats destroyed, with onsite areas for animal orphans as well as volunteer homes that house orphaned animals off-site. The Lindsay Wildlife Experience also provides a number of exhibits aimed at kids and adults alike. The  Raptor Redwood Grove exhibit allows kids to take a look at various birds of prey and see the magnificent birds spread their wings. They offer a behind the scenes look at how their wildlife hospital operates. A honey bee hive lets visitors view the lives of bees in an enclosed environment and watch how they interact with each other.

Many events are also offered that appeal to children and adults. Upcoming events include a Neon Scorpion Hike, where hike on the face of Mount Diablo. As you hike, you’ll encounter neon-colored scorpions, allowing the hikers to get a sense of where scorpions tend to live and how they interact with the environment. These events aren’t constant fixtures of the Wildlife Experience, so always be sure to check what events are coming up when planning a trip.

The Lindsay Exhibit Hall hours are Tuesday through Sunday, 10 AM through 5 PM. They are closed on Mondays most of the time, though they may be open for certain events. Always be sure to check their calendar for more details.
