The Oakland Zoo, located at 9777 Golf Links Rd. in Oakland, CA 94605 is Oakland’s premier zoo. Not only that but it is among one of the best zoos in the country to visit today. With tons of cute and cool animals to see, tours, exhibits, and other attractions, it’s easy to see why people hold it in such high regard. Let’s take a look at why so many people in California love the Oakland Zoo and why you should make the effort to go see it with your family.
The Oakland Zoo, located in the Grass Valley area of Oakland, is well known for it’s humane treatment and dedication to the animals that it cares for. The zoo is managed by the Conservation Society of California and even runs the largest LEED-certified animal hospital in northern California. In addition to it’s commitment to animals, the Oakland Zoo is also leading the way in green technology being integrated into zoos. The packaging and utensils used by their on-site cafe are completely biodegradable, with composting bins to dispose of the waste in. They also recycle their grease through state-certified means and use solar power whenever possible.
The Oakland Zoo exhibits over 750 different types of animals, including both native and exotic animals. Included are different species of mammals, birds, arthropods, amphibians, and reptiles among others. Famous types of animals include lions, African elephants, rabbits, and zebras, in addition to many other interesting exhibits. One of the best things about the Oakland Zoo is the sheer amount of animals to check out.
In addition to just watching animals, one of the most exciting parts of visiting the Oakland Zoo is the detailed and beautiful way the zoo lays out its habitats for the animals. There are many open land areas that simulate habitats such as the African Savannah or the Australian Outback. This is great for the animals that need these habitats to survive and allows visitors to interact with them in a natural way.
The Oakland Zoo also offers a wide array of educational opportunities for many age groups to get involved in. The zoo staff frequently work with local schools and community groups. They also hold summer camp activities and teen-oriented workshops. They even have a wide array of family-oriented activities, such as an animal feeding event, volunteer creek clean-up meetings, and the family sundown safari.
The park hours for the zoo are Monday through Friday 10 AM to 4:30 PM, with weekend and holiday hours being 9:30 AM to 4:30 PM. Please do note that they are closed in observance of Thanksgiving Day, Christmas Day, and for their Walk in the Wild annual fundraiser. Admission is free for babies, senior citizens, and military veterans. Gondola rides are free with admission for all visitors. Keep in mind that their limited parking fills quickly between the hours of 10:30 AM to 2:00 PM. It is advised that you take the bus during those hours, or that you plan your trip to arrive before 10 AM or after 2 PM.
